How to Create a Brain Lab:
A brain-based space for helping kids regulate, connect, and get ready to think

As a school counselor, I kept seeing the same challenge: a child would become overwhelmed, shut down, angry, restless, or simply unable to engage, and we would often try to talk with them about what happened before their brain was really ready for that conversation.
We might ask, What happened? Why did you do that? What could you do differently next time? Those are reasonable questions, but they require parts of the brain that can be much harder to access when a child's nervous system is overwhelmed.
We wanted a space where kids could learn what was happening inside their own bodies and practice what to do about it. Rather than simply sending a child somewhere to "calm down," the Brain Lab was designed to give us a process: notice your current state, help your nervous system regulate, reconnect, and then move into reflection and problem-solving.
You may have heard spaces like this called a calming corner, calm-down corner, peace area, peace corner, Zen Zone, sensory space, regulation room, or reset space. A Brain Lab can include some of the same tools and ideas, but it uses a more intentional process built around helping children notice their body state, regulate, connect, and then return to higher-level thinking and problem-solving.
The Brain Lab can be an entire room, but it doesn't have to be. You can create one in a classroom corner, library, counseling office, administrator's office, intervention space, or anywhere else kids have an opportunity to pause and reset.
The Brain Lab is organized around a simple sequence:

What changed?
The Regulate, Relate, Reason sequence comes from the work of Dr. Bruce Perry and reflects an important principle of brain development: when a child is stressed or dysregulated, we often need to work from the lower parts of the brain upward.
Regulation comes first. Then, connection helps create the safety needed for engagement. Higher-level thinking and problem-solving come later. The Brain Lab takes those ideas and turns them into something kids can actually experience and practice.
Before doing anything else, kids learn to notice their own internal state.
When I used the Brain Lab in a school, we taught students to Check Your Engine using three colors:
🔵 BLUE — My engine is running low
A child might notice that they feel tired, sluggish, disconnected, heavy, unfocused, or like they don't have much energy.
🟢 GREEN — My engine feels ready
Their body has enough energy without feeling overwhelmed. They are more available for connection, learning, and problem-solving.
🔴 RED — My engine is running high
Their body may feel revved up, restless, tense, agitated, overwhelmed, or like it needs to move.
The colors aren't about whether a child is being "good" or "bad," and they aren't simply labels for emotions. A child can be happy and have a high-running engine. They can be sad and still have an engine that feels fairly regulated.
The goal is to help kids become curious about something many adults still have trouble noticing: What is happening in my body right now?
After checking their engine, students sign into the Brain Lab with their current engine color. This gives them a starting point and gives the adult supporting the Brain Lab useful information about what the child may need for regulation.
Once kids have checked their engine, they can begin figuring out what their nervous system needs. This is an important distinction because regulation doesn't always mean becoming calmer.
A child whose engine is running high may need activities that help release energy and gradually settle their system. A child whose engine is running low may need movement, rhythm, sensory input, or something activating enough to help bring their system back online.
A Regulation Station might include opportunities for:
rhythmic movement
breathing
pushing or pulling
stretching
bilateral movement
sensory input
balance
grounding
heavy work
quiet repetitive activities
The specific tools matter less than helping children make the connection: This is how my body feels, and these are some things I can try when it feels this way.
Over time, the Brain Lab becomes more than a place kids visit. It gives them a vocabulary and a collection of regulation strategies they can begin using elsewhere.
Once the nervous system has had an opportunity to regulate, we move toward connection. Children are not designed to regulate entirely on their own. Our nervous systems are deeply relational, and a calm, attuned adult can be one of the most powerful regulation tools available to a child.
The Relate portion of the Brain Lab can look different depending on the setting. It may involve a brief conversation with a trusted adult, a cooperative activity, a game, drawing together, connection cards, or simply having someone sit nearby and be present. It could be shared poetry magnets with a peer, practicing affirmations in a small group, or coloring a wall poster with someone they need repair with.
This doesn't have to become a counseling session. The purpose is to help the child experience: I'm safe. I'm connected. Someone is with me. That connection helps create the conditions for the next part of the process.
This is the part adults are often tempted to start with before the child is regulated fully. Once a child is more regulated and connected, their brain is much more available for the skills we were hoping to access in the first place: reflection, language, perspective-taking, planning, impulse control, and problem-solving.
The Reason station might include:
talking through what happened
identifying what the child needed
considering another person's perspective
restorative circle
problem-solving
planning what to do next
repairing a relationship
deciding how to return to class
reflecting through drawing or writing
puzzles, brain games, Rubics Cube
Not every Brain Lab visit needs a lengthy Reason activity. Sometimes the most appropriate outcome is simply that a child is regulated enough to return to learning. The important part is the sequence: we aren't expecting the thinking brain to do its best work while the rest of the nervous system is still sounding an alarm.
Before leaving the Brain Lab, the child checks their engine one more time. Where is my engine now?
When I used this process in a school, students signed in with their engine color and signed out with their engine color. This created a simple before-and-after measure and, more importantly, helped kids notice whether what they had just done actually changed how their body felt.
In our experience, we saw many students move toward green during their Brain Lab time. The goal isn't to teach children that they always have to be green. Blue and red states are normal parts of being human. Instead, we're helping kids develop something they can carry with them long after they leave the Brain Lab: the ability to notice their internal state and begin discovering what helps them move toward the level of regulation they need for what comes next.
One of my favorite things about this model is that it can be adapted to the space and resources you already have.
A classroom teacher might create a small Brain Lab corner with a Check Your Engine visual and several carefully selected regulation activities. A librarian might create a quiet Brain Lab area where students can reset before returning to class. An assistant principal or administrator might use the Brain Lab process before asking a dysregulated student to talk through a conflict or disciplinary situation. A school counselor might have enough space to create separate Regulate, Relate, and Reason stations. A school could also create a dedicated Brain Lab that students access throughout the day.
You don't need an elaborate sensory room or an enormous budget. What makes it a Brain Lab isn't how much equipment is in the room. It's the process children are learning:
Notice what is happening inside me.
Respond to what my nervous system needs.
Reconnect.
Then think about what comes next.

The Brain Lab was developed through my work with children in a school setting and was influenced by Dr. Bruce Perry's work on the importance of Regulate, Relate, Reason.
The Brain Lab applies those principles through a structured environment in which children check their internal state, engage with regulation and relational supports, move toward reasoning when they are ready, and then reassess their state before returning to their day.
It isn't intended to replace mental health treatment, crisis intervention, special education supports, or individualized behavior plans. It is an educational, brain-informed approach for helping children build awareness of their nervous system and practice skills for regulation, connection, and problem-solving.
